Personalised career growth

A career growth pathway for every citizen, role and organisation

AI Edge Skills helps people build the confidence, judgement and practical AI capability needed to grow in an AI-enabled economy. It is not a static catalogue of courses. It is a personalised pathway that connects learning to work, evidence, progression and opportunity.

For learners, employees, apprentices, people changing career and those at risk of displacement, it creates a clearer route from learning to evidence, from evidence to confidence and from confidence to opportunity.

For employers, it creates a way to develop people, redesign work, protect talent and build AI capability without leaving staff behind.

Not a catalogue. A pathway.

AI Edge Skills turns AI learning into personalised growth, evidence of capability and practical value in work. It supports any learner, any role, any organisation and any career stage, helping people adapt, progress and stay relevant as work changes.

Learners of mixed ages working together in a bright college space
School leavers, apprentices, students and colleagues already in work all join the same spine.

A different kind of pathway

Why this is different

Most AI learning platforms help people find courses. AI Edge Skills helps people build a pathway.

It connects safe AI foundations, everyday productivity, role-based capability and project-led transformation into one progression model. People can start where they are, move at the right pace and build evidence that is relevant to their career, employer and future opportunities.

Direction

Purpose, vision and mission

AI Edge Skills is being built as a practical bridge between education, employment, innovation and regional growth. The proposition is intentionally ambitious, but grounded in responsible delivery, employer relevance and evidence of value.

Purpose

To help people build the confidence, judgement and practical AI capability needed to participate in an AI-enabled economy, while helping employers and partners turn AI adoption into better work, better services, new opportunities and inclusive growth.

Vision

To become a trusted, employer-led AI skills pathway that connects learners, educators, employers, civic partners and communities, creating a repeatable model for work-ready AI capability that can scale from the North East into other regions and sectors.

Mission

To co-design, deliver and continuously improve modular AI skills programmes from Foundation to Gold, using real work, live briefs, tutor support, learner evidence and partner feedback to keep the pathway current, practical, responsible and aligned to social and economic growth.

The mission is not to train people on tools alone. It is to develop human, technical and organisational capability so people can use AI safely, creatively and productively in real contexts.

Growth

AI skills as a growth engine

AI Edge Skills is built on a simple belief. AI capability should not sit outside the economy. It should help people, teams and organisations create value.

For learners, that means confidence, work-readiness and evidence of capability.

For employers, it means safer adoption, better productivity, stronger teams and clearer routes to innovation.

For the region, it means connecting education, business and civic ambition so AI supports growth, inclusion and opportunity.

This is why the pathway is employer-led, evidence-based and designed around real work.

Productive people

Learners and employees build practical AI capability they can apply immediately in real roles, teams and workplace tasks.

Growing organisations

Employers shape live briefs, role needs and project opportunities so AI skills translate into productivity, service improvement, innovation and business value.

Regional momentum

Partners help connect education, SMEs, corporates, civic services and sector networks so AI capability supports jobs, reskilling and regional growth.

The bigger challenge

The bigger challenge is growth, not just training

AI is changing work, but skills alone will not solve the problem. The challenge is not only whether people can use AI. It is whether organisations can turn AI into better work, better decisions, better services and better opportunities.

That requires more than awareness. It requires a pathway that connects safe AI use to everyday productivity, role-specific capability, project delivery and measurable outcomes. AI Edge Skills gives employers a way to shape that pathway and gives learners a way to evidence the value they can create.

AI Edge Skills responds to this by connecting learning with real organisational need. It helps people build practical capability while helping employers shape the work, projects and pathways where that capability can be applied.

Economic growth

Helping organisations identify AI-enabled opportunities, redesign work and create new routes into productive roles.

Social mobility

Giving learners, employees, apprentices, career changers and people affected by labour-market change a practical route into emerging work.

Human capability

Developing curiosity, imagination, communication, judgement, empathy and responsibility alongside technical fluency.

Why AI Edge Skills exists

Why AI Edge Skills exists

AI tools will continue to change. The lasting capability is not memorising a platform or learning one set of prompts. It is knowing how to ask better questions, challenge outputs, work across disciplines, communicate clearly and use judgement.

AI Edge Skills develops the whole person, not just the tool user. It builds technical confidence, responsible judgement and the social skills needed to apply AI in real teams, with real customers and real organisational priorities.

Human capability

Human skills are AI skills

The future workforce will not be defined by technical fluency alone. As AI becomes part of everyday work, the most valuable people will combine digital confidence with the human skills that help organisations make better decisions, build trust and create new value.

Curiosity

Asking better questions and exploring what AI can unlock.

Imagination

Seeing new possibilities for roles, services, products and experiences.

Critical thinking

Challenging outputs, checking assumptions and spotting risk.

Communication

Explaining AI-supported work clearly to colleagues, customers and stakeholders.

Collaboration

Working across teams, disciplines, sectors and communities.

Judgement

Knowing when to use AI, when to check it and when human decision-making matters most.

Trust

Using AI safely, ethically and transparently.

Adaptability

Keeping pace as tools, roles and workflows evolve.

What we mean by growth

What we mean by growth

Growth is not only commercial. For AI Edge Skills, growth means people progressing, employers adapting, organisations innovating and the region building the capability to respond to AI-led change.

Workforce growth

Employer growth

Organisations identifying AI-enabled opportunities, improving workflows, supporting teams and creating new routes into productive roles.

Innovation growth

Learners and employees using AI to explore new services, smarter processes, better customer experiences and sector-specific opportunities.

Regional growth

Education, employers and partners working together so AI capability supports inclusion, productivity, jobs and competitiveness across the North East and beyond.

Apprenticeships, levy and funded skills

Aligned to apprenticeships, funded skills and workforce development

AI Edge Skills is designed to align with existing education, apprenticeship and funded-skills routes rather than sit outside them. The pathway can support apprentices, T Level learners, college students, graduates, employees, people returning to work, people affected by AI-driven displacement and those not currently in education, employment or training.

For employers, this means AI Edge Skills can be shaped around existing skills investment, including apprenticeship levy-funded development where appropriate, employer training budgets, ESG and social value funding, regional skills funding, innovation funding and sponsored access.

Funding and eligibility depend on the college or provider, the relevant standard and the delivery model. Modules are levy-compatible, funding-ready and designed to align with funded skills routes where eligible.
